Trainee Plant Buyer
Location: Port Sunlight Garden Centre, Wirral
Hours: 32 per week, 5 days a week (flexible seasonally)
Salary: £28,000 per annum (increasing upon completion of training)
Contract Type: Permanent, in-person role

About Us
We are a family-run business with two sites based in Wirral and Liverpool. Passionate about plants, gardening, and great customer experience, we pride ourselves on offering an inspiring and enjoyable shopping environment for our customers and team alike.

We are now recruiting for a Trainee Plant Buyer at our Port Sunlight store — an exciting opportunity to learn the full plant buying process from the ground up. This is a long-term role with excellent progression potential for the right candidate.

The Candidate

You will have:
A keen interest in gardening, plants, and plant care.
Previous supervisory or management experience, ideally in a commercial or retail environment where your transferable skills can shine.
A friendly, approachable, and confident manner when dealing with customers, suppliers, and colleagues.
Good physical fitness, as this role involves outdoor work in all weather conditions, assessing stock and visiting nursery suppliers to select plants.
Excellent written and spoken English.
Strong computer skills — particularly Microsoft Excel — and a solid understanding of EPOS systems.

The Role
As Trainee Plant Buyer, you’ll gain hands-on experience in all aspects of plant procurement and stock management.

Your key responsibilities will include:
Stock Buying & Management – Training to use historical sales data, placing weekly orders, and managing pre-season reservations.
Range Planning – Agreeing seasonal ranges, stock holding requirements, and margin targets.
Ordering & Stock Accuracy – Ensuring stock levels are maintained to maximise sales and minimise waste, with regular stock counts to ensure accuracy.
Communication – Liaising with our EPOS team regarding new stock, price amendments, promotions, and data updates.
Team Engagement – Sharing plant health updates, new ranges, and exciting arrivals with the plant area team.
Supplier Relations – Visiting nurseries and trade shows in the UK and Europe to source and select the best stock.

Once training is complete, you’ll take full ownership of the plant buying function — ensuring the right stock is in the right place at the right time, improving sales performance, and maximising plant area profitability.

Training & Development
We envisage the journey to fully trained Plant Buyer will take around two years, progressing through:
Houseplants
Bedding and seasonal lines
Hardy perennials, shrubs, and trees

Training will be hands-on, involving plant care, watering, merchandising, and supplier management, giving you the knowledge and confidence to take full buying responsibility.
