The Local Area

We are incredibly lucky here at Port Sunlight Garden Centre, to be surrounded by beautiful walks, attractions and plenty of things to do.

The Village of Port Sunlight is world famous for many reasons, we love the relaxation of the Garden Village that’s offered by its mature trees and gardens. So why not make a whole day of it or a long weekend and visit some of our neighbours, too?

The village of Port Sunlight was founded by ‘Soap King’ William Hesketh Lever in 1888. The village was built to house Lever’s ‘Sunlight Soap’ factory workers. You will find in the village’s beautiful gardens, stunning architecture, Port Sunlight Museum, and the world-class Lady Lever art gallery.

Port Sunlight Museum and Garden Village are open almost every day of the year. With a small charge for the Museum, a visit will bring the Port Sunlight Garden Village ‘Soap Story’ to life. The village also boasts mature trees, listed buildings and the old cottage hospital… that is now the delightful Leverhulme Hotel.

Port Sunlight Village

Lady Lever Art Gallery was founded by William Hesketh Lever in memory of his wife Elizabeth. A magnificent building standing with a Pond and large Fountain in front as you approach from the Garden Centre. You will find Pre-Raphaelite paintings, Wedgwood jasperware and sculptures to name a few of the collections. The Port Sunlight War Memorial found in the centre of the village was built to commemorate those who had been lost in the First World War.

A short 10 to 15-minute walk away is Port Sunlight River Park created in 2014. An area that transformed 28 Hectares of landfill into a calm and relaxing wildflower and wetland area brimming with wildlife.
